Few regions in Korea retain original copies of their hyangan (registers listing members of the local gentry), but Uiryeong Hyanggyo (the local Confucian school) holds a large number of the Uiryeong hyangan and related documents. There also survive volumes that bind together supplementary registers (hyangan-churok) and new rosters (sinan), as well as several documents relating to entry into the hyangan (hyangan-imnok). A notable feature of the hyangan is that members of the Uiryeong Nam clan who did not live in Uiryeong, but who served in Gyeongsang province as provincial governors, magistrates or postal-station officials, were nevertheless additionally entered into the register — showing the strong attachment they felt toward Uiryeong County, their ancestral seat (bon-gwan). Documents of this kind have not been found anywhere else in the country, making them extremely important materials, and they are accordingly designated a Gyeongsangnam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage.
