Dongan in Hwayang-ri, Uiryeong
의령 화양리 동안 · 宜寧 華陽里 洞安

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOf the dongan — village registers recording the members of a local self-governing compact (hyangyak) — found across the country so far, most survive only in fragmentary, short-lived form. The dongan of Hwayang-ri, Uiryeong is exceptional in surviving as a substantial body of material well preserved over several hundred years, from immediately after the Imjin War through the Japanese colonial period and on to the years after Liberation. This continuity is a rare case even within Korea as a whole. The Hwayang-ri, Uiryeong dongan is therefore valuable material demonstrating that, from the mid-Joseon period onward, the tradition of autonomously implementing the hyangyak in the Uiryeong region was stronger than in perhaps any other locality, and it is worth designating as heritage and preserving.
