The Local Gentry Registers (hyangan) kept at Yeongyejae Hall survive only partly intact: a considerable portion of some registers has been cut away, while other volumes carry notes describing damage done to the register at the time — evidence of the fierce disputes that once arose between clans and social strata over whose names were entered on the roll. As original manuscripts found nowhere else, they are also an important record that preserves, unaltered, aspects of contemporary society. Today most families hold a booklet called the Yeongyean, a combined register of Jinju-born examination graduates, made by binding into one volume — whether printed or hand-copied — the Yeonbangan (the roster of saengwon-jinsa examination graduates) and the Gyebangan (the roster of mungwa examination graduates) compiled in 1910. The Yeongyean of Yeongyejae Hall, in which registers from every period survive together at once, is an extremely rare body of material nationwide, and an important source for examining the standing of the influential families of the Jinju region at that time.
