Yi Jung-hwan's Taengniji contains the passage "Half of Joseon's talented people were born in Yeongnam," meaning that half of the talented men of Joseon came from the Yeongnam region. Jinju in particular produced so many notable figures that the Gang, Ha, and Jeong clans all trace their clan seats there, and the compiling of registers of names flourished in the Jinju area as well. These took the form of the Yeongyean and the Hyangan. The Yeongyean was a roster recording the names of those from Jinju who had passed the state civil service examinations, while the Hyangan was a register recording the names of local scholars who combined learning with virtuous conduct. Descendants whose ancestors' names were recorded in the Hyangan and Yeongyean during the Joseon period built the Yeongyejae in Okbong-dong, Jinju, to keep these registers safe, treasuring them as a great honour. The descendants also held gatherings at the Yeongyejae, where they would settle matters of common concern within the county by consensus, and would respond to consultations from the local magistrate. This material has been recognised as important for examining the standing of the influential clans that shaped the Jinju region during the Joseon period, and the shifts in the balance of power among them, and it was designated a cultural heritage item in 2005. It was originally kept at the Yeongyejae in Okbong-dong, Jinju, but because of the high risk of theft it has been entrusted since July 2005 to the care of Muncheongak, the old-book reading room of Gyeongsang National University Library.
