Inscribed "Geollyung25nyeon" Cloud Gong of Yongmunsa Temple, Namhae
남해 용문사 건륭25년명 운판

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe unpan (cloud-shaped ritual gong) is symmetrical left and right around a cintamani-shaped ornament at its top, and its outer edge is worked into a flame shape around a circular striking point at the centre. Unlike the typical unpan, which takes the shape of a cloud, this one has an unusual form closer to a flame, and it is taller than it is wide. It is a double-sided gong, decorated on both the front and back around the striking point with relief-carved patterns. Above the striking point are three roundels, each containing a Sanskrit seed-syllable, arranged in a triangular pattern, and three holes for hanging the gong are drilled, one at the top and one on each side. The striking point is bordered by a double circular rim; there is no particular carved decoration within the striking point itself, but a stylised lotus scroll pattern is engraved inside the rim. In the space around the striking point, fiddlehead-scroll motifs and winding lines run on continuously; given the nature of an unpan as an object, these are presumed to be a stylised cloud pattern. Around the striking point is a punch-dotted inscription reading "a day in the fifth month of the gyeongjin year, the twenty-fifth year of the Qianlong reign" and "Baekcheonsa Temple, Jinju." The pattern on the back is likewise the same as the front, except that the lotus scroll pattern within the border of the striking point is omitted, and it bears the punch-dotted inscriptions "acquired on a day in the second month of the jeongyu year, the seventeenth year of the Daoguang reign" and "Yongmunsa Temple, Namhae."
