Seated Rock-carved Bodhisattva in Saengsong-ri, Uiseong
의성 생송리 마애보살좌상 · 義城 生松里 磨崖菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis bodhisattva is a rock-carved seated image, 213 cm in overall height and 164 cm in figure height, discovered during construction of the Nakdanbo integrated management centre site at Section 32 of the Nakdonggang River restoration project. It wears a triple-peaked crown that flares slightly outward on both sides and holds a lotus branch in one hand. The state of the garments on the flatly incised body cannot be determined, but a circular head halo and body halo are shallowly carved on the back, and the pedestal is a double-petalled lotus pedestal carved with double outlines. In terms of carving technique, the body is rendered almost as a flat line drawing, whereas the face is worked in realistic, finely executed low relief. This combination of techniques is judged to be typical of the methods used to produce rock-carved Buddhist images that were widespread in the early Goryeo period.
