Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBongnimsa Temple holds a total of eight Buddhist textual items in its collection: Lotus Sutra, Volume 1; Lotus Sutra, Volumes 3-4; Lotus Sutra, Volumes 4-7; Diamond Sutra, Part 1; the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha's Fundamental Vows and Merits; the Buljeongsim Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Great Dharani Sutra; Worin seokbo, Volume 21, Part 1; and the Sutra of Profound Gratitude towards Parents. The first volume of the Lotus Sutra, translated by Kumarajiva, is a woodblock print. It bears no publication colophon, but judging from the paper and layout, it appears to be an accordion-bound (jeopcheopjang) edition published in the fourteenth century. The accordion-binding format, which followed the earlier scroll format, was widely produced in the mid-to-late Goryeo period and is regarded as an important resource in bibliographical studies. As this particular sutra is clearly printed, it is an extremely valuable resource for research on Buddhist scriptures, bibliography and bookbinding.
