Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBongnimsa Temple holds eight Buddhist textual items in total: the Lotus Sutra, Volume 1; the Lotus Sutra, Volumes 3–4; the Lotus Sutra, Volumes 4–7; the Diamond Sutra (Geumgang banya baramilgyeong), first volume; the Sutra of the Merits of the Fundamental Vows of the Medicine Buddha of Lapis Lazuli Radiance; the Great Dharani Sutra of Avalokitesvara; Worin seokbo, Volume 21 (first part); and the Sutra on the Profound Kindness of Parents. Volume 1 of the Lotus Sutra, composed by Kumārajīva, is a woodblock-printed book. It bears no colophon, but on the evidence of its paper and format it appears to be an accordion-fold binding (jeoncheopjang) printed in the fourteenth century. Accordion-fold binding followed scroll-form binding and was widely produced in the middle and late Goryeo period, and is treated as an important source in bibliographical studies. As the printing of this sutra is clear, it is an extremely valuable resource for research into Buddhist scripture, bibliography and bookbinding.
