Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJeon Si-seo, who wrote under the pen name Hwarimjae and had served in the government post of Dongjijungchubusa, a senior second-rank office, built Seosan Seowon around 1640 and first erected a pavilion of silver grass, a tall reed used for thatching, beside it, at the site of the present Geoyeonjeong Pavilion. When the seowon burned down in a fire in 1853 it was restored the following year, but it was demolished in 1868 under the order abolishing seowon academies. In 1872 Jeon Jae-hak and other descendants of Hwarimjae in the seventh generation took down the silver-grass pavilion and rebuilt it using timber salvaged from the demolished Seosan Seowon; a further repair took place in 1901. Geoyeonjeong Pavilion stands in the stream in front of Bongjeon Village, about 9 km from Anui-myeon, Hamyang County towards Jeonju along National Route 26. This is the Hwarimdong valley, one of the three traditional valleys of old Anui, which together with Nongwoljeong Pavilion, Geoyeonjeong Pavilion and Yongyudam Pool forms a scenic area. Geoyeonjeong Pavilion is built as a single structure on the bedrock of the Namgangcheon Stream flowing in front of Bongjeon Village.
