Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis statue is enshrined as the principal Buddha in the Daeungjeon Hall of Doseongam Hermitage, Changnyeong, while the flanking bodhisattva statues on either side were newly made in 1991 when the present Daeungjeon Hall was rebuilt. The separately made pedestal was produced at a later date; it is hollow in the centre, and beneath the opening a large number of dharani (Buddhist incantation sheets) inscribed with a modern votive text have been placed. The statue is in very good condition overall, with only minor flaking of the gilding and of the paint on the tightly curled hair (nabal). The Seated Stone Buddha of Doseongam Hermitage, Changnyeong, is characterised by a head where the hair and the usnisa (the cranial protrusion) are rendered smoothly without a clear boundary between them, a squarish face, and a horizontal seunggakgi (the undergarment sash tied across the chest). A sense of volume can also be seen in places, in the curves of the body and in the cheeks, hands and feet. Based on these stylistic features, the statue can be dated to the late 17th century, and despite the material limitations of stone, it reveals a delicate carving technique.
