Seated Wooden Amitabha Buddha Triad of Yongmunsa Temple, Namhae
남해 용문사 목조아미타여래삼존좌상

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddhist triad is enshrined on individual lotus pedestals arranged on a rectangular altar in the centre of the Daeungjeon Hall. Aside from the loss of three or four of the tight snail-shell curls (nabal) of hair at the crown of the head, and some flaking of the gilding on the sleeves and hem of the robe, the triad is on the whole in fairly good condition. The cavity for bokjang, the sacred contents placed inside a Buddhist statue at the time of consecration, at the base of all three statues had been opened, and most of the deposits had been stolen; only some sutras and dharani, Buddhist incantatory texts, remained, wedged into the neck, arms and legs inside the statues. In addition, the two attendant bodhisattva statues each had a separate oval deposit cavity cut into the centre of the back, apart from the one at the base, which had been crudely finished by patching with a different piece of wood. This separate cavity in the back appears to have been made to make it easier to place deposits in parts such as the interior of the arms or the head, which are difficult to reach when filling a seated statue from its base.
