This portrait, the Cheongheodang Hall Portrait, depicts the monk Cheongheodang Hyujeong (Master Seosan, 1520–1604) as a full-length figure seated in a chair, shown frontally. The overall composition is divided into two registers: a blue upper section patterned with a square lattice design, and a lower section rendered as a woven mat. The upper body is shown frontally while the lower body is seated in three-quarter profile; the monk holds a buljja, a ceremonial whisk carried by eminent monks, in his left hand and lightly touches its tassel with his right hand. His face is square with rounded contours, and the calm eyes, well-formed nose, and small closed lips convey the image of a benevolent and highly virtuous senior monk. On the right side of the painting is inscribed a title identifying it as the true portrait of the Great Seon Master Cheongheodang, who was granted a Seon monk's title, raised in rank, awarded the purple robe, and who upheld the lineage and spread the teaching; on the left is an encomium by Jo Hyeon-myeong (1690–1752). The painting measures 81.5 cm wide and 124.3 cm tall, and is made on a silk ground of three panels.
