Uundang Hall Jin Hui Portrait
우운당 진희 진영 · 梁山通度寺所藏歷代高僧影幀

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis portrait, the Uundang Hall Jin Hui Portrait, is a full-length portrait in three-quarter left profile, showing the sitter cross-legged in an armed chair, holding a string of prayer beads in one hand and a Zen staff (juanjangja) in the other. Full-length, chair-seated cross-legged portraits of this kind are understood to represent an intermediate stage in the evolution from portraits of monks seated formally in a chair to portraits showing them seated cross-legged directly on the floor. This particular portrait is unusual in showing the legs of the chair cut off at the edge of the picture. On the right of the picture is an inscription in white ink bearing the title "A True Portrait of the Great Seon Master Uundang of the Two Orders of Seon and Gyo" (禪敎兩宗友雲堂大禪師之眞), and on the left, also in white ink, is a eulogy in praise of the portrait. The picture measures 82.1 cm in width and 124.2 cm in height.
