Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis portrait is a floor-seated, cross-legged image shown from the left at a seven-tenths angle, set against a background of a cloud-patterned wall filling the upper register and a patterned rush mat in the lower register. The subject sits comfortably in full lotus position, holding a buljja, a ceremonial fly-whisk, in his left hand and a string of prayer beads in his right. On the left of the picture is an inscription in ink reading 'True Portrait of the Great Master Yeonghandang Jongyeol', and below the picture, outside the painted area, is a further ink inscription recording that in the fifth month of the eulchuk year of the Jiaqing era, the monk Yun-ok was the sole sponsor and the master painter was Jehan. This confirms that the portrait was produced in 1805 by Jehan. The picture measures 85.9 cm in width and 126.3 cm in height.
