This portrait shows the Seon master Guryongdang Cheonyu seated in the full lotus position on the floor, his face turned to an eight-tenths left profile, against a two-tier background of a green wall above and a floor mat below. He wears a crimson kasaya (monastic robe) patterned with a lattice design, holding a staff in his left hand and prayer beads in his right, with a low desk bearing a sutra placed to his right. On the left of the picture is a caption inscription written in ink on a vermilion ground, reading '兩宗都摠攝九龍堂天有大禪師眞' ('Portrait of the Great Seon Master Guryongdang Cheonyu, Supreme Overseer of the Two Orders'), and on the right is an encomium (a eulogy praising the sitter), confirming that the portrait was made in 1825. At the centre of the back are three lines written in Sanskrit script in vermilion. The picture measures 85.5 cm wide and 126.0 cm high.
