Yongamdang Hall Hyeeon Portrait
용암당 혜언 진영 · 梁山通度寺所藏歷代高僧影幀
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis portrait shows Yongamdang Hall Hyeeon seated cross-legged in a chair, his whole body shown in a left three-quarter profile (jwaan chilbunmyeon, a view turned about seven-tenths to the left). The background is divided into two registers: an upper wall painted with a continuous scrolling foliage pattern in red on a yellow ground, and a lower straw mat. He holds a monk's staff in his left hand and rests his right hand on his knee, seated cross-legged on a chair draped with a tiger skin. A distinctive feature is that the legs of the chair are shown cut off at the edge of the picture. On the right side of the painting is an inscription reading "True Portrait of Great Seon Master Yongam Hyeeon, Patriarch of the Hwaeom School, granted by royal decree the title Indestructible Dharma Cloud", and to its left is a eulogy. An ink inscription on the back confirms that the work was made in 1846 by the accomplished painter Eungwol Seonhwa. The picture measures 8.8 cm wide and 119.8 cm tall.
