Cheongdamdang Hall Junil Portrait
청담당 준일 진영 · 梁山通度寺所藏歷代高僧影幀
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe portrait shows Junil seated cross-legged on the floor in a left-facing view turned seven-tenths, set against a chair with a green beopui, a ceremonial cloth, draped over its back. He wears a blue jangsam robe with a red gasa (a monastic surplice) over it, holds a jujangja, a monk's ceremonial staff, in his left hand, and rests his right hand lightly on his knee. To the left of the painting is an inscribed title reading "Seon-gyo yangjong daegak deunggye paldo dochongseop Cheongdamdang Junil ji jin" (禪敎兩宗大覺登階八道都摠攝淸潭堂遵一之眞) — "the true portrait of Cheongdamdang Junil, Grand Master of both the Seon and Gyo orders, of the rank of Daegak, and Dochongseop (Supreme Overseer of Buddhist affairs) for the Eight Provinces." An ink inscription on the back confirms that the work was produced in 1859 by the master painter-monk Uiundang Jau. The painting measures 78.8 cm in width and 120.4 cm in height.
