Hwagokdang Hall Gyecheon Portrait
화곡당 계천 진영 · 梁山通度寺所藏歷代高僧影幀
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis portrait shows Hwagokdang Hall Gyecheon seated cross-legged on the floor in a left three-quarter profile (jwaan chilbunmyeon), holding a monk's fly-whisk in his left hand while his right hand grasps a string of prayer beads and touches the tassels of the fly-whisk. No flower-patterned mat is laid on the floor, and the background is not divided into two registers by a straw mat, which gives the impression that this represents a form preceding the later two-register composition. Together with the absence of any pattern in the background, the fact that the figure is not set within a stable triangular composition, and the unschematised rendering of his attributes and robes, this suggests that the work is a relatively early example among the floor-seated cross-legged portraits held at Tongdosa Temple. On the right side of the picture there is only the inscription "True Portrait of Great Seon Master Hwagokdang Gyecheon". The picture measures 56.5 cm wide and 84.5 cm tall.
