Hwabongdang Hall Yu Cheol Portrait
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This portrait shows Yu Cheol, the Seon master of Hwabongdang, in a left-facing view turned eight-tenths, set against a two-tier composition of an upper wall panel and a lower straw mat. A chair fitted with a backrest and armrests is placed in the scene; he sits facing sideways, holding a jujangja, a monk's ceremonial staff, in his left hand while his right hand rests on his knee. To the left of the painting there is only an inscribed title, written in ink by the temple's abbot, reading "Seon-gyo yangjong daegak deunggye paldo dochongseop Hwabongdang Yu Cheol ji jin" (禪敎兩宗大覺登階八道都摠攝華峯堂有喆之眞) — "the true portrait of Hwabongdang Yu Cheol, Grand Master of both the Seon and Gyo orders, of the rank of Daegak, and Dochongseop (Supreme Overseer of Buddhist affairs) for the Eight Provinces." The painting measures 78.7 cm in width and 120.8 cm in height.
