Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis portrait depicts Seon Master Manu of Dongmyeongdang seated cross-legged on the floor, turned to the left in an almost frontal, eight-tenths view. Set against a two-tier composition of a wall above and a floor mat below, he sits in a chair with a backrest and armrests, facing sideways, holding a monk's staff in his left hand and a string of prayer beads in his right. Over the chair is draped a green beopui with a lotus scroll pattern painted along its edge. On the left of the composition is a title inscription written directly in ink reading 'Seon-gyo yangjong daegak deunggye paldo chongseop Dongmyeongdang Manu jijin' (a true likeness of Manu of Dongmyeongdang, Head Monk of the Eight Provinces and Great Enlightened One of the Seon and Gyo Schools), and on the right is an encomium also written directly in ink. The picture measures 78.5 cm wide and 120.2 cm high.
