Hwadamdang Hall Gyeong Hwa Portrait
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This portrait shows Seon Master Gyeonghwa of Hwadamdang Hall seated cross-legged on the floor. Without a backrest, he sits facing forward on a cushion placed on a flower-patterned mat, his gaze appearing to look slightly downward. His left hand holds a monk's staff, while his right hand reaches to turn the pages of a book resting on a low desk (seoan) placed before him. In its detailed execution, the face is painted in flesh tones with the outlines drawn in yellowish brown. A distinctive feature is that the upper eyelid line is drawn with a double fine line of dark ink to emphasise the direction of the gaze; white dots are added along the hairline, and even the age spots on the face and the roots of individual hairs are rendered in fine brushwork, making the depiction of the face extremely delicate and realistic. In contrast to this meticulous facial depiction, the robes are rendered with jeollomyo, a brushwork technique that is vigorous yet softly angular, with slight gradation (barim) applied along the drapery lines to suggest shading. On the right side of the painting is only the hwaje reading 東國律師華潭堂大禪師敬和眞影 ("Portrait of the Great Seon Master Gyeonghwa of Hwadamdang Hall, Vinaya Master of the Eastern Country"). The painting measures 78.8 cm in width and 112.0 cm in height.
