Geumpadang Hall Im Chu Portrait

This portrait shows Seon Master Im Chu of Geumpadang Hall seated cross-legged directly on the floor, viewed in left three-quarter profile (a conventional pose revealing about seven-tenths of the face turned to the side). He sits on a cushion spread over a straw mat, facing sideways, holding in his left hand a monk's staff painted with a wood-grain pattern and in his right hand a string of prayer beads. Beside him stands a low desk (seoan) with books placed on it. The composition, on a green ground, is arranged in two registers: an upper wall panel densely filled with a cloud pattern, and a straw mat below. On the left side of the picture is an inscription reading "Portrait of the Great Seon Master Geumpadang Im Chu, Head Monk Overseeing Seon and Doctrinal Studies" (禪敎都摠攝金波堂任秋大禪師眞). The picture measures 90.2 cm wide and 120.7 cm high.
