Hwaneungdang Hall Min Yeol Portrait
환응당 민열 진영 · 梁山通度寺所藏歷代高僧影幀
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis portrait shows Min Yeol, the Seon master of Hwaneungdang, seated cross-legged on the floor in a left-facing view turned seven-tenths. Seated on a cushion laid over a straw mat, he holds in his left hand a jujangja staff painted with a wood-grain pattern, while his right hand lightly grips a string of prayer beads. The composition is arranged in two tiers, an upper wall panel painted with a continuous scrolling floral pattern in vermilion above the straw mat below. The drapery folds of his jangsam robe and gasa are rendered with subtle gradations of ink, giving the shading a natural appearance. To the left of the painting is an inscribed title reading "Hwaneungdang Min Yeol daeseonsa jin" (喚應堂敏悅大禪師眞), "portrait of the Great Seon Master Hwaneungdang Min Yeol." The painting measures 75.2 cm in width and 121.0 cm in height.
