This portrait depicts Seon Master O Cathedral U Chuk seated in a chair as a full-length figure, shown in a slight left three-quarter view known as jwaan chilbunmyeon (literally "seven-tenths view"). The composition is arranged in two tiers, with the upper wall filled with a cloud-and-jewel pattern above a woven floor mat. In his left hand the master holds the shaft of a bulja, a Buddhist ceremonial whisk symbolising a Seon master's authority, while his right hand lightly grasps its tassel. The figure's bodily proportions are somewhat awkward, and the strong shading around the folds of the robe points to the painting style of the late nineteenth century. To the right of the picture is an inscription reading, in translation, "A true portrait of the Great Seon Master U Chuk of Oseongdang, of the Seon and Doctrinal Schools," and to the left is a record titled "An Encomium for the Portrait of Seon Master U Chuk of Oseong." An ink inscription on the reverse shows that the portrait was made in 1891. It measures 93.4 cm wide by 140.2 cm high, painted on a cotton ground formed by joining two panels of cloth.
