Eungheodang Hall Do Heup Portrait
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr · no licence stated

This portrait shows Seon master Do Heup of Eungheodang Hall seated cross-legged on the floor, viewed from a left three-quarter angle, holding a monk's staff in his left hand and a string of prayer beads in his right. Behind the figure is a two-tier composition of a brown upper section and a lower section showing a straw mat, against which an arched backrest is set. The ends of the chair-back are finished with gilt roundel patterns, and a green ceremonial robe with a red-finished edge is arranged to resemble the chair itself. The face is rendered in fine line-work, with clearly defined eyes, deeply carved wrinkles and an emphasised philtrum, giving the features a dignified, commanding presence; by contrast, the drapery lines are drawn with uniform outlines and no shading, giving them a flat, schematic quality. To the left of the painting is an ink inscription by the abbot reading 'True Likeness of the Great Seon Master Do Heup of Eungheodang, Gasun-daebu, Supreme Overseer of the Eight Provinces and Director of the National Monastery, of the Two Orders of Seon and Gyo', beside which is a five-line eulogy in standard (haeseo) script. This shows that the portrait was made in 1877. A memorial stele also survives in the stupa field of Tongdosa Temple, dating from the second year of the Gwangmu era (1898). The painting measures 83.0 cm wide and 126.1 cm high.
