Gubongdang Hall Ji Hwa Portrait
구봉당 지화 진영 · 梁山通度寺所藏歷代高僧影幀
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis portrait shows Ji Hwa, the Seon master of Gubongdang, in a full-length seated pose on a chair, in a left-facing view turned eight-tenths. Set against a two-tier composition of an upper folding screen and a lower straw mat, he holds a bulja, a ceremonial fly-whisk, in his left hand, while his right hand, gripping a string of prayer beads, rests lightly on the chair's armrest. The elaborately decorated chair has a round backrest draped with a vermilion beopui, a ceremonial cloth, and a footrest is placed beneath his feet. To the left of the painting is an inscribed title, written in ink by the temple's abbot, reading "Changju Seon-gyo yangjong Gubongdang Ji Hwa daesa ji jin" (創主禪敎兩宗九鳳堂智和大師之眞) — "the true portrait of the founding Great Master Gubongdang Ji Hwa of both the Seon and Gyo orders" — with a eulogy inscribed beside it. This confirms that the portrait of Ji Hwa was produced in 1878. The painting measures 87.2 cm in width and 132.0 cm in height.
