Nagundang Hall Ji Il Portrait
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This portrait shows Seon Master Ji Il of Nagundang Hall in left three-quarter profile, as a full-length figure seated cross-legged in a chair. The overall composition is divided into two registers: an upper section in blue patterned with an auspicious cloud motif, and a straw mat occupying the lower half. The master sits on a legless chair fitted only with armrests, holding in his left hand a ceremonial whisk (bulja) lavishly decorated with a gilt dragon-head handle, while his right hand rests on his knee. The work illustrates a transitional form between the chair-seated and floor-seated types of portrait. On the left side of the picture is an ink inscription by the abbot reading "True Portrait of the Great Monk Nagundang Ji Il, Upholder and Propagator of the Doctrine and Head Monk Overseeing the Eight Provinces" (扶宗樹敎兼八都摠攝洛雲堂智日大和尙之眞影), and a further ink inscription appears on the reverse. This shows that the portrait was produced in 1881 by the painter-monk Gwanheodang Uigwan. The memorial stupa stele for Seon Master Ji Il, still standing in Tongdosa Temple's stupa field (budojeon), is presumed to have been erected in the same year as that of the monk Uundang Jinhui. The picture measures 76.8 cm wide and 121.0 cm high.
