Gu Cathedral Bong Ui Portrait
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This portrait shows Seon Master Bong Ui of Guseongdang Hall seated cross-legged on the floor, viewed in left three-quarter profile. Behind him, against a two-register background of an upper wall panel and a lower straw mat, a stylised chair-back is depicted, while in front of him stands a low desk with a book placed on it. An unusual feature is that, instead of holding a string of prayer beads in his right hand, the master rests it on the desk. On the right side of the picture is an ink inscription by the abbot reading "Portrait of the Great Seon Master Guseongdang Bong Ui, Rector of the Two Orders" (兩宗正事九成堂鳳儀大禪師眞), and also on the right is an encomium (yeongchan, a laudatory inscription praising the subject). The picture measures 77.8 cm wide and 121.0 cm high.
