Gimnyongsa Temple is said to have been founded by the monk Undal in 588, the tenth year of King Jinpyeong of Silla, although the temple's own historical records make no mention of the date of its founding. It burned down in a fire in 1643, the twenty-first year of King Injo of Joseon, and was rebuilt in 1649, the twenty-seventh year of his reign, continuing in that form to the present. The Daeungjeon Hall appears to have been built in the seventeenth century. It has a front of three bays and a side of three bays, and its roof is a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the character "eight" when viewed from the side. The bracket sets that decoratively support the eaves are in the dapo style, placed both above the columns and between them. An unusual feature of the hall's construction is that its columns were set up directly on the unlevelled surface of the stone platform, so that they vary in height; however, every column leans slightly toward the centre of the hall, a technique that gives the whole building a sense of stability.
