A hyanggyo is a Confucian school established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and morally instruct local residents. Yeongju Local Confucian School was first built in the seventeenth year of King Gongmin of Goryeo (1368) and has been repaired several times since. The buildings that survive today include Daeseongjeon Hall, together with Dongmu and Seomu, Myeongnyundang (the lecture hall), the east and west dormitories (Dongjae and Seojae), Jonhyeondang, Hoengnu (a gate pavilion), Jeonsacheong (the hall for preparing ritual offerings) and Jeongokcheong (the hall for storing grain). Daeseongjeon is a building of six bays whose gabled roof forms the shape of the character 人 (person) when viewed from the side. The bracket sets supporting the eaves are decorated in the ikgong style, carved in the shape of a bird's beak. Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages of China and Korea. During the Joseon dynasty the state provided land, servants and books so that students could be taught there, but today the educational function has ceased and only the memorial rite continues.
