Seated Wooden Avalokitesvara of Pyochungsa Temple, Miryang
밀양 표충사 목조관음보살좌상 · 密陽 表忠寺 木造觀音菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis statue is currently enshrined on an octagonal wooden pedestal inside a freestanding glass case at the museum's entrance. Perhaps because a long time has passed since it was gilded, the gilding above the chest shows very fine cracking throughout, and in places the gilding has flaked away on the skirt below the ankles and on the knees. There is also a crack in the wood running down from the right ankle. The index, middle and ring fingers of the right hand, and the ring finger of the left hand, were broken and have since been rejoined and repaired. Paper (hanji) was fitted inside the sockets where the wrists are inserted, to keep the loose wrists from coming apart, and after the crown was fitted, thin rolled strips of hanji were also wedged into the remaining gaps to hold it in place - evidence of meticulous care given even to the smallest details. A cavity for votive offerings was found at the centre of the statue's back, measuring about 11cm wide and 12cm high, and a circular cavity for votive offerings was also provided at the centre of the base beneath the statue. The edges of the base at the bottom of the statue are fixed at regular intervals with iron pins, and the circular cavity is likewise fixed with iron pins.
