Daeungjeon Hall of Bogyeongsa Temple, Pohang
포항 보경사 대웅전 · 浦項 寶鏡寺 大雄殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBogyeongsa Temple was founded in 603, the twenty-fifth year of King Jinpyeong of Silla, by the great monk Jimyeong, who had returned from studying in Jin, China. The date on which the Daeungjeon Hall, the temple's central building, was first built is unknown; it is only known to have been rebuilt in 1677, the third year of King Sukjong of Joseon, and to have undergone several further repairs since. The stylistic features of the present building mainly derive from a major renovation carried out in 1932. This is a wooden Buddhist hall of the late Joseon period, three kan across the front and two kan along the side, with a dapo-style hip-and-gable roof, and its floor is laid with wooden boards. The ceiling is a flat, coffered ceiling in the shape of the character 井 (well), concealing the roof structure above. At the rear of the central bay an altar is set up, enshrining a triad of Buddhist statues.
