Seated Jinju Yeonhwasa Temple Wooden Amitabha Buddha
진주연화사목조아미타여래좌상 · 晋州 蓮華寺 木造阿彌陀如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAmong the triad of Buddhist statues enshrined in Daeungjeon Hall of Yeonhwasa Temple, Jinju, the central principal Buddha is a wooden seated Amitabha Buddha made in the Joseon period, while the flanking bodhisattva statues on either side were made in recent times. According to the temple, this principal Buddha was moved here from Unheungsa Temple in Goseong, and although the other sacred objects once placed inside the statue have all been lost, more than ten types of dharani sutras were found within it. Standing over 1 metre tall, the statue wears a robe covering both shoulders and sits in the full lotus position with its hand forming the bhumisparsha mudra (the earth-touching gesture). The gilding has partly flaked away from the folds of the robe between the legs and from the back, but apart from this the statue is in generally good condition.
