구미 인동향교 대성전 · 龜尾 仁同鄕校 大成殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHyanggyo were local educational institutions established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and morally instruct local people. Indonghyanggyo is thought to have first been built in 1390, the second year of King Gongyang of Goryeo, and was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire. It was relocated to Uiin-dong in 1634, the twelfth year of King Injo of Joseon, and moved again to its present site in 1988. The surviving buildings are the Daeseongjeon, Naesammun (inner three-bay gate), Myeongnyundang (lecture hall) and Oesammun (outer three-bay gate). The Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of Confucius and of Confucian scholars from China and Korea, and is where memorial rites are held. During the Joseon period the state supported the school with land, slaves and books for educating students, but today its educational role has ceased and only its ritual function remains.
