A hyanggyo is a local educational institution established by the state to hold memorial rites for Confucius and other sages and to educate and morally instruct the local populace. Seonsanhyanggyo was first built in the early Joseon period, but it burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98; the memorial-rite space was rebuilt in 1600, the thirty-third year of King Seonjo, and the educational space was added in 1624, the second year of King Injo. Having undergone repairs on several occasions down to the present, Seonsanhyanggyo has its educational space at the front and its memorial-rite space at the rear. Passing through the gate tower, one finds the Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall where students gathered to study, and the Dongjae and Seojae, the students' eastern and western dormitories. The Daeseongjeon Hall is where the spirit tablets of Confucius and of Confucian scholars from China and Korea are enshrined and memorial rites held. During the Joseon period the school received land, servants, and books from the state to teach its students, but today its educational function has ceased and only the memorial-rite function remains.
