Brick-style Stone Pagoda in Samji-dong, Yeongyang
영양 삼지동 모전석탑 · 英陽 三池洞 模塼石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone pagoda stands on a protruding boulder halfway up a cliff-forming mountain; it is a brick-style stone pagoda (mojeon seoktap) built by stacking up stones trimmed into brick shapes. The pagoda uses a large rock as its foundation platform, with the pagoda body set on top; it is said to have originally had three storeys, but only the first two survive today. On the front of the first-storey body stone is a niche (gamsil), a chamber for enshrining a Buddha image; four gilt-bronze Buddha statues of the Silla period are said to have been found inside it, but they are no longer extant. The roof stones form stepped tiers on both their upper and lower faces. The pagoda is presumed to have stood at Yeonghyeolsa Temple, which once stood near present-day Yeondaeam Hermitage. Yeonghyeolsa Temple was founded before Silla's unification of the Three Kingdoms, and this pagoda too is thought to have been built at that time. When the pagoda was dismantled for repair in 1998, a stone reliquary and one sari (Buddhist relic) were excavated.
