Gaseobam Hermitage of Anjeongsa Temple was first built in 669, the ninth year of King Munmu of Silla, by the monk Bongjin, a disciple of the Great Master Wonhyo. It was destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598 and has since been rebuilt and repaired several times. It is said to have been rebuilt during the reign of King Injo by the monk Byeokbong, who reportedly also founded Palsangjeon Hall at Yeongeunsa Temple in Gangwon-do in 1641, the nineteenth year of King Injo. An inscription on a ridge-end roof tile of the hermitage's main hall (Inbeopdang) bears the date corresponding to 1647, the twenty-fifth year of King Injo — close enough to the Yeongeunsa Temple date that the reconstruction of Gaseobam Hermitage can likewise be estimated to 1647. The building is thought to have reached its present form through a number of subsequent repairs.
