Daeungjeon Hall of Jeokcheonsa Temple, Cheongdo
청도 적천사 대웅전 · 淸道 磧川寺 大雄殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJeokcheonsa Temple was first built as an earthen cave hermitage in 664, the fourth year of King Munmu of Silla, by the Great Master Wonhyo for his meditation practice. In 828, the third year of King Heungdeok of Unified Silla, the Royal Preceptor Simji rebuilt it; the temple subsequently burned down and was rebuilt several times, and in recent years the Myeongbujeon Hall (the hall of the Ten Kings of the underworld) and the pavilion have also been reconstructed. Daeungjeon Hall has a front of three bays and a side of three bays, with a gabled roof that, seen from the side, forms the shape of the character 人 (person). The bracket sets that decoratively support the roof eaves are arranged in the dapo style, placed both above the columns and between them. Although the hall appears to have been built in the late Joseon period, construction techniques characteristic of the early Joseon period can also be seen in places.
