Seated Stone Amitabha Buddha of Bueunsa Temple, Miryang
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr · no licence stated

This image is enshrined as the principal Buddha of the main hall of Bueunsa Temple, forming a triad flanked by Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta as attendants. The stylistic features of the two flanking images differ from those of the principal Buddha, indicating that they were made by a different sculptor. The gilding has flaked off from raised areas of the skirt and from the hem of the outer robe on the back, but apart from this the condition is relatively good. The cavity for sacred contents was hollowed out at an angle from the base of the statue, forming a narrow, deep, rectangular cavity with a two-tiered opening at roughly knee height; because this cavity was left open, it is presumed that a wooden pedestal was added in recent times. According to the temple, this Buddha image is known to have served as the principal image paired with the Stone Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva enshrined at the Pogyodang (proselytising hall) of Tongdosa Temple, Yangsan, and on the basis of a votive text found inside that bodhisattva image, it is dated to 1688.
