Ksitigarbha Ten Kings Buddhist Painting of Hwabangsa Temple, Namhae
남해 화방사 지장시왕탱 · 南海 花芳寺 地藏十王幀

This hanging Buddhist painting (taenghwa) continues the tradition of eighteenth-century Buddhist painting, and shows the work of a school of painters who were highly active and left many works in Jeolla-do and Gyeongsang-do Provinces in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. After a fire in 1981 completely destroyed the Daeungjeon Hall, in which the Buddha triad, the altar painting behind the main image, and a gwaebultaeng - a huge Buddhist painting hung outdoors for great ceremonies - among other sacred treasures were lost, the sacred objects that survived in the various halls and monks' quarters have since been kept in the temple's present temporary storage. Of these surviving items, only the main Ksitigarbha painting and seven of the ten Ten Kings paintings remain in good condition.
