This building was built in 1671, the 2nd year of King Hyeonjong, as a study by Yi Yun, son of Yi Ji-hwa, the founding ancestor of the Dapogong branch of the Jeonui Yi clan to settle in the area. Jangyukdang was built by leaving the gently sloping ground as it was and raising a level platform on top of it. The building as a whole is T-shaped, a twelve-bay tile-roofed house. The front four bays are used as wooden-floored rooms, and at the rear are the main building's four-bay room together with a one-bay raised pavilion floor (numaru) linked to it by a side bay. The hall's name, Jangyukdang, is said to derive from the phrase 'gujangyukjiui' (求長育之義, 'seeking the principle of nurturing growth'), symbolically expressing how Yi Yun declined official office and lived in seclusion in order to cultivate future scholars.
