The 'Terauchi Collection' (寺內文庫) held by Gyeongnam University Museum consists of Joseon-period documents returned from the Terauchi Collection built in Japan (now held by Yamaguchi Prefectural University) by Terauchi Masatake (1852–1919), who served as the third Resident-General and first Governor-General of Korea and later as Prime Minister of Japan, using materials he had gathered while stationed in Korea and taken back with him to Japan. The Terauchi Collection at Yamaguchi Prefectural University in Japan is said to hold roughly 1,000 titles and 1,500 items of documents relating to Joseon. On 24 January 1996, Gyeongnam University Museum received 98 titles in 135 volumes and one scroll (1,959 items) of these as a donation from Yamaguchi Prefectural University, and it now displays and preserves them. These artefacts were able to return home through the combination of Gyeongnam University's active and sustained determination to recover cultural heritage, the Terauchi family's willingness to donate them, and the cooperation of the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians' Union, and the case is regarded as a model example of the repatriation of cultural heritage that had flowed out of the country. The artefacts held by Gyeongnam University Museum carry added significance in that cultural heritage which had flowed overseas during a difficult period for Korea was recovered in bulk through the cooperation of civil society, government and academia.
