Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Shakyamuni Buddha Yeonggol Sari Stupa Stele of Tongdosa Temple, Yangsan, is a stone stele standing in front of Daeungjeon Hall and the Geumgang Gyedan Ordination Platform at Tongdosa Temple, in Habuk-myeon, Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do. It was designated a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Gyeongsangnam-do on 2 January 2014. The stele was erected in 1706, when Master Gyepa renovated the Geumgang Gyedan Ordination Platform, to record the origin and history of the Buddha's true relics (sari) enshrined there. The first line on the front of the stele reads, in a combined inscription, "Stupa Stele for the True Relics of Shakyamuni Buddha, Lord of the Saha World," and recounts how Vinaya Master Jajang brought the relics from China; how, during the Japanese invasions, the invaders seized the relics; how Master Samyeong recovered them and sent them to Master Seosan; and how Master Seosan then had them re-enshrined here, since Tongdosa was the very sacred site where the great sage Munsu Bodhisattva (Manjusri) had appeared to Jajang in a dream. From the middle of the back of the stele onward, both the content and the style differ, and unusually the composer and the calligrapher also differ from those of the front. This section records the life of the Buddha, followed by the history of the enshrinement of the Buddha's relics at Tongdosa Temple and a list of the donors (yeonhwajil) who contributed to the project. It is a stupa stele that records the history of Tongdosa Temple in fine detail.
