Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChwiunjeon Hall of Tongdosa Temple, Yangsan, is a building at Tongdosa Temple in Jisan-ri, Habuk-myeon, Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do. It was designated a Gyeongsangnam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage on 1 December 2016. Chwiunjeon was first built in 1686, the 12th year of King Sukjong, and repaired 171 years later in 1857, the 8th year of King Cheoljong; it continued to be repaired in the modern era, and was completely dismantled and restored in 2008, in the form in which it stands today. Through the 2008 repair, the existing abbot's quarters, main hall, kitchen and front and back verandas were removed and the entire building was converted into a Buddha hall, with a Thousand Buddhas altar including a triad altar installed, so that the original spatial layout was completely changed. However, the structural members, bracket components and framing timbers that make up the building remain as they originally were. Evidence of the original form, which is a key criterion for evaluating cultural heritage, is therefore quite lacking; however, the building retains its original appearance in architectural form, and the change to its spatial layout has been documented in the "Report on the Maintenance and Recording of the Area around Chwiunam Hermitage, Tongdosa Temple, Yangsan," so its history can be traced. In addition, the "Record of the Ridge-Raising for the Repair of Chwiunam Hermitage," found when the building was dismantled and repaired in 2008, allows the exact dates of its construction and repair to be known, which enhances its value as cultural heritage. Furthermore, the dragons, phoenixes and white elephants used to adorn the Buddha hall, together with the fine shaping of its timber members, are of excellent quality, and in particular the shaping and carving technique of the bracket sets is an extremely rare technique not seen in any other Buddha hall in Korea, making the building highly significant cultural heritage from the standpoint of architectural history.
