Hansansogokju
한산소곡주 · 韓山素穀酒

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHansansogokju is a renowned liquor of the Hansan region, its colour similar to cheongju, a clear rice wine. It is said to have been a royal court liquor of the Baekje period, brewed and drunk by Baekje refugees after the fall of their kingdom to forget their sorrow. By the Joseon period it had become the most widely known liquor of its kind, its method of production recorded in works such as Donggukseasigi, Gyeongdojapji, Siuijeonseo and Gyuhapchongseo. Sogokju is made by brewing glutinous rice and letting it ferment for one hundred days. It is said that a daughter-in-law tasting the liquor with a dab of a chopstick to check its flavour could become drunk without realising it, unable to stand and instead crawling about like someone who cannot walk—hence it is also known as "anjeunbaengi-sul," the "liquor of the lame." Hansansogokju, an outstanding folk liquor of distinctive flavour, is carried on by Woo Hui-yeol, the holder of the skill.
