This is an inkstone made from black stone found in Nampo-myeon, Boryeong, and it came to be called the Nampo inkstone because it was produced in great quantities in the Nampo region. Inkstones have been used since the Nangnang period, and their use spread widely during the Goryeo dynasty with the flourishing of Neo-Confucianism. As a result the craft techniques also developed, and since 1961 the inkstones have also been exported. In the production process, black stone is brought and worked by hand, and it is finished by carving various distinctive designs and patterns into it, such as traditional motifs of dragons, phoenixes, pine trees and bamboo. The distinguishing feature of the Nampo inkstone is that ink grinds well on it and the ink liquid does not dry out, remaining usable for a long time. The skill of making the Boryeong Nampo inkstone, a systematised technique passed down over three generations, has been recognised for its value as intangible heritage and designated an intangible heritage of Chungcheongnam-do; the current holder of the skill, Kim Jin-han, carries on this tradition.
