Nongak is a general term for music played on percussion instruments such as the kkwaenggwari (small hand gong), jing (large gong), janggu (hourglass drum) and buk (barrel drum) by farmers organised into a dure, a cooperative labour group formed to carry out a village's communal work. Jeongeup Farmers' Music is a form of nongak handed down from village to village that was fused with the outstanding artistry of hereditary shaman performer groups, raising its artistic standard. Furthermore, in the 1920s Bocheongyo, a popular religion of the region, adopted nongak as its ritual music and drew together outstanding nongak performers from far and wide, integrating them and once again raising its artistic level. Since then, Jeongeup Farmers' Music has had a great influence on nongak not only in the North Jeolla region but across the whole country. Yu Ji-hwa and Kim Jong-su are currently recognised as holders of this skill.
