Gimje Farmers’ Music
김제농악 · 金堤農樂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNongak is the general term for the music played by farmers organised into dure - cooperative teams formed to carry out communal village labour - performed on percussion instruments such as the kkwaenggwari (small gong), jing (large gong), janggu (hourglass-shaped drum) and buk (barrel drum). Gimje Nongak is a form of Honam Udo Nongak, the farmers' music of Udo, the low-lying "right province" district of the Honam region, and covers the nongak traditions found throughout the Gimje area. From early times it was handed down village by village in the form of daedonggut, a communal ritual for the well-being of the village, before developing into nongak performed by more specialised groups of performers. In the make-up of its nongak troupe, the soe (small gong) and janggu are used as the principal instruments, the large buk is not used, and the dure-gut of the flat, open farmland is highly developed - these are its distinguishing features. Park Dong-geun and Kim Hae-sun are currently recognised as holders of the skill for seoljanggo, solo janggu playing.
