Gochang Farmers’ Music
고창농악 · 高敞農樂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGochang Nongak is farmers' music that developed along the coastal areas of Gochang, Mujang and Yeonggwang. While it shares the general character of Honam Udo Nongak, the farmers' music of the low-lying "right province" district of Honam, it is distinguished by the rich development of japsaek-nori (comic costumed play) and by the refinement of its gokkalsogo-nori. Gokkalsogo-nori is a dance performed wearing a conical paper hat, the gokkal, to the rhythm of samchae-garak, in which the dancer moves the sogo (small hand-held drum) with lively, improvised gestures that flow flexibly with the rhythm and the unfolding of the performance. Jeong Chang-hwan, a disciple of Gang Mo-jil, is recognised as a holder in the sogo section, and now devotes himself to training the next generation at the Gochang Dongni Gugakdang and the Gochang Nongak Training Centre.
