Nongyo are songs sung while working in the fields or paddies to forget fatigue and raise efficiency; they are also called deul-norae (field songs) or nongsajitgi-sori (farming songs). They are a form of folk song, sung individually or in groups, and can vary from region to region. Yecheon Gongcheonongyo is a labour song that was widely transmitted along the banks of the Nakdonggang River. Because it belonged to an isolated inland village, it was sung purely within this one village, without mixing with or being influenced by neighbouring cultures. Its repertoire is made up of the rice-transplanting song, the paddy-weeding song, the threshing song, the geolchae (carrying-frame) song, and chingchingi (kwaejinachingchingi). The rice-transplanting song is sung while transplanting rice seedlings, the paddy-weeding song while weeding the paddies, the threshing song while threshing barley, and chingchingi while coming out of the fields after weeding. This folk song is said to preserve the most primitive form. Yecheon Gongcheonongyo has been passed down retaining its local character, and it embodies the sorrows and joys of farmers. It is carried on by Hwang Gi-seok, a holder of the skill, who lives in Pungyang-myeon, Yecheon-gun.
